The Power of Song

February 07, 2019 by Sucharita Varanasi in Culture

When I play this song, I feel powerful.  If this song is playing as I’m walking down the street, I walk to the beat, with a stride that exhibits power and strength.  I feel like I can accomplish anything when I hear this song.  That’s what a power song can do.  It can reach to your core by empowering and emboldening you.

I like to play this power song as prep for a big meeting, or en route to my company’s headquarters in Springfield.  I crank up the volume and just play it.  I absorb it all- the feelings and images that are created by the music.  I still don’t know all the lyrics.  And honestly, the lyrics are not what make this song a power song for me- it’s the music, the beat, the ability to walk in sync with it and the gait with which I carry myself.  I find that when I play a power song, that I feel more confident, that I feel better about myself and that I can conquer anything.

I’ve had different power songs for different periods of my life. Songs that I listen to over and over again, because they usually help me through a difficult time or inspire confidence. During my senior  year of college it was Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of by U2 and while running the marathon, Remember the Name by Fort Minor provided me with the added umpf that I needed to push through and cross the finish line.

My power song at the moment is You’re Mine by Raving George; what’s yours?
